The Overzealous Interviewee

Tom had been job hunting for months and finally got an interview at a prestigious company. Determined to make a good impression, he spent days preparing, researching every aspect of the company and even practising his answers in front of the mirror.

On the big day, Tom arrived at the office building 30 minutes early, his suit freshly pressed, and his shoes shining. He walked confidently up to the receptionist and announced his arrival. She asked him to take a seat and wait.

As he sat there, Tom noticed a large fish tank in the lobby. He decided to pass the time by counting the fish. By the time his name was called, he knew there were exactly 47 fish in the tank, 10 of which were clownfish.

The interviewer, Mr. Smith, greeted him warmly and they settled into the interview room. After the usual pleasantries and questions, Mr. Smith asked, "Do you have any questions for us?"

Tom, eager to show his enthusiasm, blurted out, "Yes! How do you manage to keep 47 fish, including 10 clownfish, so healthy in the lobby aquarium?"

Mr. Smith looked puzzled for a moment, then smiled. "We don’t actually have an aquarium in our lobby. You must have been really nervous, huh?"

Tom blushed, realising he’d been imagining things in his anxious state. Mr. Smith chuckled, "Don’t worry, we value attention to detail. And congratulations, you’re hired. Just try to relax a bit more next time!

The Literal Thinker

Emma was interviewing for a position as a marketing executive. She had a knack for thinking outside the box, but sometimes her literal interpretation of things got the better of her.


During her interview, the hiring manager asked, "Can you give me an example of a time when you had to think on your feet?"


Emma paused, then said, "Actually, yes. I was once in a yoga class where the instructor abruptly changed the routine and asked us to stand on one foot. I had to quickly adjust my balance and think about how to stay upright."


The manager, trying to suppress a smile, clarified, "I meant in a professional context."


"Oh, of course," Emma said, realising her mistake. She then shared a story about how she creatively resolved a last-minute advertising crisis, impressing the manager with her adaptability.


In the end, Emma got the job, and her quirky sense of humour became one of her most endearing qualities in the office.

The Confident Misstep

John was known for his confidence, sometimes bordering on arrogance. When he got an interview at a top law firm, he decided to showcase his assertive personality.

During the interview, the senior partner asked, "Why should we hire you over the other candidates?"

John leaned forward and said, "Because, to put it simply, I’m the best."

The partner raised an eyebrow and asked, "Really? Can you elaborate?"

John, realising he needed to back up his bold claim, launched into an impressive summary of his accomplishments, legal victories, and skills. By the end of his speech, he felt he had nailed it.

The partner smiled and said, "Confidence is good, John. But next time, remember that humility can be just as powerful. You’re hired, but don’t forget—being the best also means being part of a team."

John walked out, a little chastened but wiser, ready to start his new role with a more balanced approach.
