How to Write a Strong Cover Letter

A well-written cover letter can set you apart from other applicants by showcasing your personality, enthusiasm, and suitability for the role. It complements your CV by providing context to your experience and explaining why you are the right fit for the job.

1. Address the Hiring Manager Directly

Whenever possible, address your cover letter to a specific person rather than using a generic greeting like "Dear Hiring Manager." Look at the job posting or the company’s website to find the name of the hiring manager. If you cannot find a name, "Dear Hiring Team" is a professional alternative.

2. Start with a Compelling Introduction

Your opening paragraph should grab the reader’s attention and clearly state the role you are applying for. Briefly mention why you are interested in the position and the company. A strong introduction sets a positive tone for the rest of your letter.

3. Showcase Your Relevant Skills and Experience

Rather than repeating your CV, highlight specific skills and experiences that match the job description. Use examples to demonstrate how your abilities have contributed to past successes. Focus on how you can add value to the company.

4. Express Enthusiasm for the Company

Employers want candidates who are genuinely interested in their organisation. Show that you have researched the company by mentioning something specific about their mission, recent projects, or company culture. Explain why you want to work there.

5. End with a Strong Closing Paragraph

Wrap up your letter by reaffirming your interest in the role and expressing your eagerness to discuss your qualifications further. Thank the reader for their time and consideration. A polite and confident closing leaves a lasting impression.
